Can Leopard Geckos Swim? Facts & Safety Guide

Web Desk · June 6, 2023 ·

Leopard geckos are a popular pet reptile, and many owners wonder if they can swim. The answer is no, leopard geckos cannot swim. They are not built for swimming and can easily drown if they are placed in water.

Leopard geckos are terrestrial animals, meaning they live on land. They are adapted to living in dry, arid environments and do not have the necessary adaptations to survive in water. They do not have webbed feet or gills, and their bodies are not streamlined for swimming.

In addition, leopard geckos are not strong swimmers. They can become easily fatigued and may not be able to keep their heads above water. If they are placed in water, they may panic and drown.

It is important to keep leopard geckos out of water. If you need to clean their enclosure, use a damp cloth or sponge and avoid submerging them in water.

Leopard geckos can also be bathed, but it is important to do so safely. Use a shallow container filled with lukewarm water and make sure the gecko can easily climb out. Do not leave the gecko unattended and be sure to dry them off thoroughly after the bath.
