Types of dog harness: Which harness type suits my dog?

Web Desk · January 31, 2023 ·

A dog harness is a device that fits around a dog’s torso. A harness is used for walking, training, or controlling a dog. They are a popular alternative to dog collars, which fit around the dog’s neck. As compared to collars, a harness distributes pressure more evenly across the dog’s chest and reduces the risk of injury to the neck and trachea.

Types of dog harness

Harnesses vary in styles and materials and can be used for a range of purposes, including obedience training, pulling carts, and providing extra support and protection for dogs with disabilities or medical conditions.

Listed below are six types of dog harness and their uses. Decide which win will suit your dog.

How to Fit a Dog Harness? A Complete Guide

Back-Clip Harness: harnesses which have a D-ring on the back for leash attachment are called Back-Clip Harnesses. They are ideal for dogs that do not pull on the leash and are well-behaved. A back-clip harness is also a good option for small dogs that may not have the strength to pull against a front-clip harness.

Front-Clip Harness: harnesses with a D-ring on the chest for leash attachment are known as Front-Clip Harnesses. The front-clip harness is ideal for dogs that pull on the leash or tend to pull their owner in one direction. The front-clip harness helps to steer the dog in the opposite direction and provides more control over the dog’s movements.

No-Pull Harness: No-pull harness is designed to discourage dogs from pulling on the leash. It typically has a front-clip D-ring and a back-clip D-ring. When the dog pulls, the front-clip D-ring tightens and restricts the dog’s movement, making it uncomfortable for the dog to continue pulling. This type of harness is ideal for dogs that are strong pullers or tend to pull their owner in one direction.

Step-In Harness: This type of harness is easy to put on and take off, making it a good choice for dogs that are not comfortable wearing a harness. A step-in harness is also a good option for dogs that have mobility issues or are recovering from an injury. The dog simply steps into the harness and the harness is then secured around the dog’s torso.

Vest Harness: Vest harnesses are specially designed to provide additional protection for working dogs or the ones that are prone to injury. The vest harness covers the dog’s chest, abdomen, and back, providing additional protection and support.

Adjustable Harness: The adjustable harness easily fits dogs of different sizes and shapes. Such harnesses are designed for dogs that are growing or for owners who have multiple dogs of different sizes. The adjustable harness is typically made of adjustable straps that can be tightened or loosened to fit the dog’s body.
